Who conducts the IELTS exam?

IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) and offered through more than 500 locations in 120 countries.

Importance of  IELTS test

If you need to study or work in a country where English is the main language of communication, there are certain tests that you must take. IELTS is one of the most trusted English language tests around the world with more than 10,000 organisations recognising it internationally. Nowadays, students applying for study in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US need an IELTS assessment. Medical professionals planning to go for further studies or work in the UK, Australia or the USA require an IELTS test. Also, it is required by the people who are planning to migrate to Canada, Australia or New Zealand. The test(IELTS exam) has been setting the standard for English language testing and is trusted by countries for both academic and immigration purposes.

Types of IELTS Examinations.

  1. IELTS – Academic

The General Training format focuses on basic survival skills in a broad social and educational context. It is for those who are going to English-speaking countries to have secondary education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada and New Zealand must sit for the General Training test.

  1. IELTS – General

The Academic format is for those who want to study or train in an English-speaking university or Institutions of Higher and Further Education. Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate courses is based on the results of the Academic test.

  1. IELTS – UKVI

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test meant for anyone who wants to pursue an academic or professional career internationally. It includes IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

However, if you are planning to study, work or move to the UK, you need to give an IELTS test approved for UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) purposes known as IELTS for UKVI. This applies to everyone coming from a non-English speaking country. Remember, universities, colleges and professional bodies will only accept IELTS for UKVI score. Regular IELTS will not be considered.

Duration of the IELTS test

IELTS has four parts – Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are done in one sitting. The Speaking test may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.

What are the modules of IELTS?

IELTS has four modules: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. You get marked on these four sections and you get the IELTS total score as well. The total score is the sum of the scores in the four skill areas.

IELTS LISTENING

In IELTS Listening, you will listen to four recorded texts, monologues and conversations by a range of native speakers, and write your answers to a series of questions.

These include questions that test your ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information, ability to understand the opinions and attitudes of speakers, ability to understand the purpose of an utterance and the ability to follow the development of ideas.

Time Allotted: 30 minutes

PART 1

A conversation between two people on every day, social topic. This means that you will listen to two people talking to each other about arranging a trip, organizing an event, etc.

PART 2

This is a talk by one speaker on a general topic. This means that you listen to one person giving information about a public event, a service provided, etc.

PART 3

This is a conversation between two to four people in an educational or training context. This means that you listen to up to four people talking to each other about an assignment for a course, an academic subject in a seminar, etc.

PART 4

This is a monologue on an academic or study-related topic. This means you will listen to a person given a lecture or talk, which is focused academically.

A Few Tips for IELTS LISTENING

  • Focus on the first two parts is on listening to the specific factual information. However, in the last two parts, in addition to factual information, you have to focus on the speaker’s attitude and opinions.
  • You will be allowed approximately 30 seconds to study the questions before the test begins. Use this time to check what kind of information or answers are needed in that particular parts
  • At the end of the Listening test, the answers must be written on the Answer Sheet. After the test, you will be given 10 whole minutes to copy all your answers to the Answer Sheet and only then do you need to be doing that.
  • Do not mistakenly choose to copy the answers to the Answer Sheet during the time given before each part begins, because that time is for you to concentrate on reading the questions about the new part, to understand what’s coming up or what kind of information you need to focus on in the new part.

IELTS READING

The reading module consists of three reading passages of increasing difficulty, and there is a total of 40 questions to answer.

A variety of question types is used to test a wide range of reading skills. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument, recognizing writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose.

Time Allotted: 60 minutes

Both IELTS ACADEMIC and GENERAL TRAINING have different reading sections. The major difference in the syllabus is their sources:

This considers academic sources like books, magazines, newspapers all of which are targeted at candidates aspiring to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies.

  • IELTS General Training Reading: reading considers general-interest sources like advertisements, magazines, journals all of which are required for candidates planning to work/migrate abroad.

A few tips for IELTS READING

  • Pay attention to the grammar structure. You may see various types of grammar structures, but try to understand them all, they will be helpful for your writing. Most of us have limited vocabulary, but if you are weak at grammar, you don’t know what the text refers to. You might lose the main idea due to this.
  • You must have known that skimming and scanning are two essential tools in reading. Both rely on the understanding of main ideas. Therefore, if you can’t grasp the main ideas in a short time, you will lose time. This can be learned by reading various articles.
  • Another way to practice reading is speed reading. However, reading as quickly as possible is NOT the key. If you read so fast that you have to read again, there are no benefits gained from this practice. The key here is picking out the main ideas, and next details. Besides understanding all the main points, you should try to remember as many details as you can.

IELTS SPEAKING

IELTS Speaking module assesses your speaking ability and vocal clarity. It involves a one-to-one interaction between the student and an examiner. This section includes three parts, which give the student the examiner a chance to check the student’s range of different speaking skills. IELTS Speaking section is recorded at the time of examination.

Duration: 11-14minutes

Part 1: The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself, your family, interests, studies, work etc.

Part 2: You will be given a task card that asks you to speak on a given topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking.

Part 3: The examiner will ask you questions related to the topic given to you in Part 2, allowing you to discuss the issues and ideas connected to the topic.

A few tips for IELTS SPEAKING

  • Once you start speaking, continue until the examiner stops you. Don’t just answer the question in one line and stop.
  • Display your best English language skills. Imagine like it was a driving test – keep going straight until told to turn right, left or park.
  • There are chances that you have to speak about something you have never heard of, or have no opinion on. If you are unfamiliar with the topic, tell the examiner so he asks you another question. If you don’t tell him and start speaking, the examiner might think that you don’t have the flow because of the language problem.

IELTS WRITING

In IELTS Writing, you need a different approach for each of the four sections. For the writing section, in particular, you need to know the rules of writing and the structure of writing. How you write reflects how you process your thoughts. To develop your writing style, you need to stick to the rules and practice writing a lot.

Total Duration: 60 Minutes

Academic Writing

The Writing section of the IELTS Academic exam includes two tasks. The topics are suitable for candidates entering undergraduate and postgraduate studies or seeking professional registration.

Task 1

Students are presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and are asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in their own words. They may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event. The main purpose of this task is to see how well a student assimilates information and can put that understanding in his own words.

Time allotted: 20 minutes

Word Limit: 150 words

Task 2

Students are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. Responses to both tasks must be in a formal style. The standpoint of the student should ideally be neutral, as this is an exercise where there are no correct or wrong answers, but rather the focus is on the correct style of writing.

Time allotted: 40 minutes

Word Limit: 250 words

General Training Writing

There are two tasks in the General Training Writing test: Task 1 and Task 2.

Task 1

In General Training IELTS Writing Task 1, candidates are required to respond to a given problem with a letter requesting information or explaining a situation.

Time allotted: 20minutes

Word Limit: 150 words

Task 2

General Task 2 of the Writing module is always a discursive essay question that requires you to write about a contemporary social issue. You are given a point of view, an argument or a problem, and are asked for your opinion. The content of the essay must be relevant to the question. The ideas expressed in the essay should be logically organized and supported. Different parts of the essay should be logically and grammatically connected; the essay must be coherent and cohesive.

Time allotted: 40 minutes

Word Limit: 250 words

A few tips for IELTS Writing

  • Before writing an essay, you must know its basic structure. A book about essay writing will help you understand the structure and format of essays better.
  • Attempt Task 2 first, because it is worth more marks and is comparatively easier.
  • Don’t waste a lot of time on Task 1. Learn all the specific writing structures for each type of task 1. In the real test, you just have to apply that structure with new data and suitable verb tenses. Read sample essays and take note of the ones with good structure to have a wide range of academic structures for task 1. Some structures might be used in task 2 as well.
  • Writing requires good vocabulary. Consult a dictionary to look up the meaning and usage of new words to enrich your vocabulary.
  • Avoid informal writing. There are some rules of writing you should follow.
  • Each body paragraph has to include: the topic sentence, supporting sentences (2-3 sentences), and development sentences (including example, experience, and data).
  • Understand the test rules and format.
  • Practice Sample Questions. Do both 2 tasks in one hour. You can focus only on task 1 or task 2, but before the test, you should practice writing both tasks to get familiar with time limits.

What are the eligibility criteria for IELTS?

As such, there are no minimum IELTS Eligibility criteria 2021 set by the conducting bodies like IDP and British Council. IELTS is a language proficiency test that is given by those candidates who wish to study in an English-speaking country and aim to gain global exposure. The medium of teaching in a majority of the colleges, universities and educational institutions in the major English-speaking countries is English language only. So, the candidates should have a basic understanding of the language to pursue their higher studies successfully. According to the IELTS exam pattern, the candidates are assessed on four parameters Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Will I pass or fail in IELTS?

There is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ in IELTS. Candidates are graded on their performance in the test, using scores from 1 to 9 for each part of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Your results from the four parts then produce an Overall Band Score.

This unique 9-band system consistently measures scores – wherever and whenever the test is taken. It is internationally recognised and understood, giving you a reliable international currency

Is there any age limit for IELTS?

The minimum age for giving the IELTS exam is 16 years. Anyone over the age of 16 can give the IELTS Test irrespective of nationality or background. Exceptions can be made where the school requires an IELTS score for admission. There is no age limit or eligibility criteria set by the ETS, the body that conducts this exam, but it is preferred that the aspirant should have crossed 16 years of age.

Ways to take IELTS

IELTS on computer

With IELTS on Computer, there are more test dates available, test takers can choose IELTS at a time convenient for them, and they will receive their results in three to five days.

The Test Report Form, content, timing and structure of the test is the same whether you take the test on paper or computer and the Speaking test is always face-to-face with a certified IELTS Examiner. Your results will be published in 3-5 days after the exam. If you choose to take IELTS on Computer, you will take the Listening, Reading and Writing test using a computer. All aspects of the test are identical to IELTS on paper, including:

  • Question types
  • Content
  • Timings
  • Marking

The speaking exam will be with an IELTS examiner using a high-definition video call.

In the IELTS on Computer Listening test, the timings are slightly different from IELTS on paper. This is because IELTS on paper requires users to transfer answers to an answer sheet. This step becomes redundant when answering directly on a computer.

Before the start of each part of the Listening test, you will have some time to read the questions.

  • After the end of each part of the Listening test, you will have some time to review your answers.
  • At the end of the Listening test, you will have 2 minutes to check your answers. The timing of the Listening test is between 30 – 34 minutes

IELTS on paper

This test requires test takers to sit at a desk with the question papers and answer sheets for the Reading, Listening and Writing tests in an official IELTS test centre. Test takers will write their answers in either pen or HB pencils. The Speaking test is carried out face-to-face with a trained IELTS examiner.
